Embracing Midlife: A Season of Power, Purpose and Rebirth
5/8/20242 min read
There comes a moment - quiet or crashing - when we realise we've reached the middle of our story. Midlife. For some it sneaks in quietly, with a few slow physical changes (those annoying grey hairs, chin hairs, ear hairs..!). For others it arrives with a roar - a health scare, children leaving home, redundancy because "we just don't need you in your job anymore". However it begins, midlife marks a turning point, and contrary to cultural myths - it's not downhill. It's a sunrise - an awakening, a new chapter....
The Myth of the Crisis
The phase midlife crisis has been the narrative for too long. Images of sports cars, divorce, desperate reinventions, chaotic, panicked change dominate our imagination. The midlife crisis narrative is set to scare us - give us a sense that there will be change that we cannot control. But, in truth, we can control every aspect of our midlife midpoint - if change is what we need, we can not only control it, but lead it and dictate it. We can embrace it and see it as an exciting new step in our lives. There's a different future to plan and enjoy. Midlife isn't a crisis. It's a calling.
The Gifts of Midlife
At midlife, we carry both the weight and the wisdom of experience. We've weathered storms, made mistakes and survived crisis and disappointment. We've learned about grief and loss and learned how to heal as best we can. We carry the physical and mental scars of a life grown up. But we've also tasted love, connection, security and resilience. We've reached a point where we can use our experiences to be inspirational, we can share our knowledge of the world - and wish we knew when we were younger what we know now!
With the years behind us, and with the benefit of hindsight, we can finally see what matters. Relationships take on a new meaning, priorities sharpen, calm becomes important. As the kids grow up and the career becomes a little less important, this is the chance to take stock and rewrite the script. What do we really want from life? Who do we want to be? This is the time to explore, plan, create - with a new focus and intention.
The Courage to Begin Again
One of the bravest, most powerful things we can do in midlife is to start something new. A new project, a new career, a new way of living. Age shouldn't limit us, it should liberate us. There is nothing to prove. It's time to be ourselves. This is the beginning of the showcase of you. Be you proudly. Laugh louder, love harder, let go more easily. Trust that your best chapters could still be unwritten - and you hold the pen!
